The Junior Cycle caters for students in the 12 to 15-year-old age group.
Students normally sit the examinations at the age of 14 or 15 years, after three years of post-primary education.
In First Year students participate in a subject tasting programme coupled with strong guidance to assist with their subject choices.
Students are surveyed for their choices and the timetable options are manipulated to meet student demand where possible. Students can choose to study more than one continental language from First Year onwards.
The Core Curriculum is as follows:
- Irish (unless an exemption is held)
- Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE)
Three additional subjects are taken from the following list:
- Technical Graphics
- Home Economics
The following non-exam subjects are also included in the curriculum
- Physical Education (PE)
- Social & Personal & Health Education
- Religious Education
